Understanding the Four Types of PCOS: A Holistic Approach to Healing
Nov 19, 2024As a health coach, I encounter PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) more and more frequently in my work with women. While the name might suggest that every case of PCOS involves ovarian cysts, that’s not always true. PCOS can present itself in various ways, and knowing what type you have is essential for healing.
The good news? You can manage PCOS holistically by understanding its root cause and making targeted lifestyle changes.
The Four Types of PCOS
PCOS isn’t a one-size-fits-all condition. There are actually four different types of PCOS, and it’s possible to experience an overlap between them. Let’s take a closer look at each:
1. Inflammatory PCOS
This type is often linked to gut imbalances and chronic inflammation in the body. Inflammation disrupts hormone production and can trigger the symptoms of PCOS.
What to Do: Healing your gut is key! Focus on anti-inflammatory foods, probiotics, and gut-healing practices to reduce inflammation.
2. Adrenal-Driven PCOS
Androgens (male hormones) are produced in our adrenal glands, as well as in our ovaries. In adrenal-driven PCOS, high stress levels and chronic stress response may cause an overproduction of these hormones.
What to Do: Focus on stress management techniques, such as meditation, mindfulness, and proper sleep, to support your adrenal health.
3. Insulin-Resistant PCOS
Insulin resistance can cause your body to produce excess androgens, which disrupt hormone balance. It also contributes to estrogen dominance—a condition where estrogen levels are high relative to progesterone. This is one of the most common types of PCOS.
What to Do: Managing your blood sugar levels is crucial here. Focus on eating balanced meals that are rich in protein and healthy fats, along with regular resistance training to help build lean muscle and improve insulin sensitivity.
4. Post-Birth Control PCOS
Some women may develop PCOS after stopping the birth control pill. This is often due to a rebound effect, where androgens are overproduced after being suppressed by birth control.
What to Do: In this case, your body needs time to rebalance after hormonal suppression. Supporting your body with nutrient-dense foods and supplements that encourage hormonal balance is key.
Finding Your Root Cause: The Path to Healing PCOS
Because the symptoms of these four types of PCOS often overlap, the best thing you can do is take a step back and evaluate which type (or types) may be affecting you. Working with a healthcare professional or a holistic health coach like me can help you identify the root cause(s) of your PCOS and create a plan to address them one by one.
For example, if you have insulin-resistant PCOS, there are a few key steps you can take to manage it:
Tips for Insulin-Resistant PCOS:
- Increase Protein Intake: Aim for 1g of protein per pound of ideal body weight each day, whether you’re an omnivore or vegan. This helps balance blood sugar and supports lean muscle mass.
- Resistance Training: Incorporating strength training is one of the most effective ways to improve insulin sensitivity and boost metabolism.
- Sleep & Stress Management: No matter which type of PCOS you have, making sure you’re getting enough quality sleep and effectively managing stress is critical for hormone balance.
PCOS: It’s About Progress, Not Perfection
Living with PCOS can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that small changes lead to big results. By understanding the type of PCOS you have, you can start to heal in a way that works for your body. Whether you’re focusing on gut health, stress management, blood sugar regulation, or hormonal balance, taking it step by step is the path to long-term success.
